Introduction

People might think my story is complicated to which some some extent I agree. That being said, my story has shaped who I’ve become and who I want to be as a teacher. As someone who’s lived in five different countries, I’d like to think that my philosophy as a teacher is a blend of all the cultures, teachers and environments I’ve come to know. It’s a blend of strictness after following Singaporean laws, making fun with what you have that I’ve learned from living in underdeveloped parts of the Philippines, understand that every individual is unique from walking through the streets of Hong Kong and having time for freedom and fun following many hikes in the Swiss Alps.

As a teacher, I strive to elicit open-mindedness and a drive for exploration through my own life experiences and tolerance towards different experiences, cultures and points of view in my classroom. In a world that is more connected than ever before, being a global citizen is one of the most important qualities someone can have. I recognize that you don’t have to live in five different countries to do so but just being aware that there are other countries and experiences out there and that the world doesn’t revolve around your own home country. As fascinated as people are with my story, I’m as equally fascinated in learning about my future students’ experiences here in America — a country I know little about. I can’t want to see how my views on the world ultimately blend and clash with views of my future students.

Something I’ve learned through my studies in humanities and social studies is that we live in a massive world. With a world as vast as ours, it’s hard to remember that there are many different ideals, points of views and opinions amongst other things. I’ve learned to think of myself as somewhat of a realist because of it — I accept the fact that there are things I have absolutely no control over but don’t stay satisfied with them. I work to improve myself so that I can end up having a capacity to gain some control over those things I didn’t once have control in order to influence them. “Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” — Steve Maraboli. It’s something I live by and strive to carry out in my future as a teacher and hopefully as a member of government.
