My Baptism Testimony

My path in faith hasn’t been without difficulties and being a follower of Jesus didn’t solve my personal issues. That is not why I’m here today. I echo the same reasons like many parishioners here in…

The Number One Advice When Starting A Business

This Took Me A Lifetime To Learn

When I was still in school, I had a job on the side as a waiter.

I learned at least as much as a waiter than as a student.

Waiting tables was hard work but most of the times we had a great deal of fun as well.

And one day, we came up with our own label for a certain class of people:

W.B.R or ‘wasted beyond recognition’.

If you have worked a retail job even for one day, you probably know exactly the type of people I’m referring to.

The ones that are always negative.

They’re a pain.

And they always got to me.

Remember, I was only eighteen or so and didn’t have the life experience to deal with people like that.

Someone would be difficult or outright disrespectful to me, I would react and they would complain to my boss and that would ruin my day.

They always won and I always lost.

Some people live to fight and don’t care about losing or wining. In fact, just fighting the fight is a win in their book.

It took me the longest time to figure this out.

And I only figured it out when after a while the same people returned and would cause a fight with another waiter over another ‘problem’.

One day the food was too hot, the other day it was too cold. Sometimes they had to wait too long, other days the bill came way too fast.

Those people are basically unstoppable complaint machines.

And hey, in case you think that fixing their complaints would make for a big tip?

For some weird reason, the biggest complainers are the smallest tippers.

I’m sure that doesn’t surprise you.

Later on, I owned an e-commerce site.

And surprise, those ‘always negative’ people are also shopping online.

At first, I would have the most exhausting email conversations with people always ready for a good fight.

I was eventually so gutted by it that I started to look for possible solutions.

And after a lot of trial and error, I realized that ninety-nine percent of those people stopped bothering me when I did one simple thing.

It was so simple that I didn’t even believe it would work at first. And no, I didn’t come up with it, I read about it somewhere on an e-commerce forum.

‘Molly, stop wasting my time and tell me the magical trick!’

Fair enough. The number one trick that helped me to get rid of negative people was to raise prices.

Yes, I lost a little bit of revenue but I never had to bother with difficult people ever again.

I call that a definite win.

Negative people are always going to exist.

There’s nothing we can do about that.

But what I learned throughout the years is that there are some ways to chase them away.

Raising prises is one way if you’re running a business or starting one.

But even if you’re starting a blog, there are some ways to deal with negative people.

One solution is not playing their games.

Most of the time when people criticize something you wrote, it’s not because they want to learn or grow.

No, it’s because they want you to enter into a fight with them.

I’m never tempted to do that.

In fact, I even went on the offence by posting some extremely polarizing viewpoints and blocking every troll that started to lose their stuff.

It works like a charm.

Luckily, there are few negative people on here.

I truly think Medium is one of the nicest social media platforms I’ve ever been on.

It’s probably why I managed to post over 411 stories and stay motivated.

My number one advice when starting a blog, business or any other adventure?

This world could truly be an amazing place of infinite abundance and dazzling creativity.

But the W.B.R won’t get us there.
