I recently had the opportunity to network effectively at a conference for my industry. I was excited for the chance to meet and connect with key players in my field, so I had a plan to introduce myself to as many people as possible in a short amount of time.

At first, I approached networking like a machine, introducing myself to everyone I met without taking the time to get to know them or their work. I quickly found that this approach wasn’t effective, as I was getting nowhere and not making any meaningful connections.

So, I changed my approach. Instead of just introducing myself and walking away, I took the time to get to know people, ask them questions about their work, and even offer help. I was amazed by the difference in results. People were more interested in what I had to say and were more willing to connect with me.

The key takeaway from this experience is that networking effectively isn’t about quantity, it’s about quality. Taking the time to get to know people and build relationships is much more effective than just introducing yourself to as many people as possible.
