Is Uber coming to Ashland?

On September 18thof 2018, the Ashland City Council passed a transportation network ordinance that would help companies like Uber and Lyft to provide their services. However, both companies have yet to provide their services in the area and it is because they want part of the ordinance amended. The city of Ashland requires that both companies and their employees must have an Ashland drivers license. On top of that vehicle safety checks had to be done as well as making their vehicles wheelchair accessible.

Stephen Jensen states that Uber has already “leaked” its way into Ashland and that it wouldn’t be a “operational stretch” to allow amend the ordinance and allow them into Ashland. Kelly Madding, city administrator, agrees that it would be a stretch but that there was more to it. “Even if the ordinance passed,” Madding claims, “That doesn’t mean they will provide their services to the Ashland area.”

Making these vehicles accessible for wheelchairs could help part of the Ashland population who is disabled or unable to drive. Her name was not accessible, but an elderly woman decided to speak up on this issue. This woman mentioned that the quality of life is rather important to those who are unable to do much movement on their own, and that Uber could be beneficial to those who still want to be able to enjoy things outside of their home.

“To what extent do we think that that requirement is still necessary,” Tonya Graham asks after bringing up the fact that Valley Lift has these wheelchair services. This was very important to bring up because it shouldn’t stop the city from allowing Uber when there is another company to provide the wheelchair accessibility.

A revision of this ordinance will be made and presented to the council next week, February 5th. If the new ordinance is passed, these limitations will be lifted.
