Why I Swear By A Morning Routine

My morning routine is my armor for the day.

After one week of falling off my morning routine, I have realized this:

Adhering to my morning routine is a crucial aspect of being able to show up every day as my best self. My morning rituals set me up for the rest of my day.

To me, fully showing up means being fully present. And that entails being healthy, patient, and aware. In order to do be all of these things, I need time to gather my thoughts, nourish my body, and get my blood flowing.

Without a morning routine, I am very reactionary. In other words, my mood and attitude are at the mercy of the environment.

A simple notification, situation, or rude statement can throw me off if I allow myself to be reactive first thing in the morning.

When I skip these important steps in the morning, I don’t allow myself to fully wake up or show up in my life the way that I want to.

There are five crucial rules to my morning routine:

No phone within 30 minutes of waking up.

Instead of waking up to check notifications, text, or email, I have the first part of my day to be with myself and to listen to my own needs.

Water, water, water.

Since the body wakes up dehydrated, supplying my body with tons of water first thing in the morning rejuvenates me and supplies me with energy.

Movement.

For some, this could be a morning run or stretching. For me, a short walk or 10 minute yoga routine is my preferred method of moving.

Wait 1.5–2 hours before having coffee.

Our bodies produce a chemical to help us wake up in the morning, but drinking coffee first thing in the morning inhibits the production of it.

Gratitude.

Practicing gratitude drastically shifts the lens through which we perceive the world.

By making gratitude a habit, we shift the subconscious mind into focusing on what is good and letting go of what does not serve us.

My morning routine is my armor for the day. When I take the time to put on my armor, I am much more prepared for whatever the day may entail. I feel prepared to take on any external circumstance that may arise.

By prioritizing my time in the morning, I am able to live in the way I want to for the rest of the day.
