Fantasy Movie League

Summer Season, Week 12

There comes a point in a game where you know you can’t really win. When it comes to that point the question you have to ask yourself is whether you are going to nibble away to keep it close, or take big swings to see what might happen.

You know, like when a team is down 42–3, it’s fourth an 2 at the 10 yard line and the coach sends in the field goal unit. A field goal?!?!? Are you serious?!?!?!?

Well, at this stage in the Fantasy Movie League Season, we’re kind of there. I mentioned a few weeks ago I was far enough back I wasn’t likely to win. Instead of just trying to keep pace, I was gonna take some swings and try to make up ground or, at the very least, hit the Perfect Cineplex. Last week didn’t work out (when you go on fourth down, sometimes you don’t make it). But this week was much better.

I had a feeling that Annabelle: Creation would outpace its projection and was a must to anchor the cineplex. That worked out. That creepy doll raked in the bucks and was, in fact, the best value. I loaded up on two Annabelle: Creations, adding two Spidey’s and four Wonder Woman screens to round things out. That was good enough for nearly $92 million.

The most popular cineplex (Dunkirk x6, Girls Trip, The Glass Castle) took in $76.5 million. So I made up some ground on the masses. I didn’t, however, hit the Perfect Cineplex (Annabelle: Creation x2, The Glass Castle x3, War for Planet of the Apes, Wonder Woman x2), which took in $99.5 million and was hit by 281 folks. So I was right about that creepy doll, but I underestimated The Glass Castle and its real value.

Still, I went for the touchdown instead of kicking that field goal, and I plan to keep on doing it, no matter where I stand. And, I made up some ground. I’m now 37, up from 44, in the Fantasy Life App competition and up to 462, from 525 in Friends of TMR. Let’s keep swinging and climbing.

There’s a lot of tempting possibilities here. If I was playing it safe, I’d probably roll four screens of Annabelle: Creation because I think it will hold up well and it’s priced attractively. But I’ve never been one to play it safe, obviously.
