Where does technology fit into the classroom instruction? What positive or negative impact does it have on a student’s school experience?
My experience subbing in a variety of classrooms, at public and Catholic schools in Hartington, NE has been eye opening to the amount of technology that has been brought into the classrooms. Last year, the public high school students each had their own Chromebook that they could take to and from school, and this coming school year each elementary student will have their own. The Catholic elementary school had a cart in each classroom where my 6th grade daughter, Lauren, said they are kept in a charging station and checked out when needed. Each student is assigned a number. For example, 55 was her number that stood for 5th grade and alphabetically she was 5th in her class. The Catholic high school has several carts of laptops and iPads, but still do not have enough for each student individually. When technology is used in a positive way for learning, it is amazing! However, there are negative concerns as well.
I’ve witnessed positive student engagement studying during class using such interactive sites such as Kahoot along with programs for financial and technology classes. Other programs such as IXL and AR supports individualized learning and provides immediate and corrective feedback. Another positive is an efficient way to pre-assess and post-assess student learning. Wrapping up the pros of technology and student learning, during a junior high technology class, the students were asked to write a simile describing technology in their life. One student wrote, “Technology is like a rainbow, colorful, fun and full of variety.”
In conclusion, finding the good in everyone and in everything. Use technology as a tool and monitor concerns. Even at school, students can be bullied through technology such as a snapchat. The phones students carry could also be a benefit during a crisis at school whether it is to help locate or communicate. How do you monitor technology in your classroom?
