Do Checklists Really Work

I have been working in the chemical industry for 30 years and throughout my career I have encountered and even developed many checklists. Most of the checklists have been for safety to ensure that all precautions against incidents have been taken before and while performing a task. The checklist can include things like:

…Or anything that will protect the worker, the equipment and the environment.

People have viewed these checklists as a way of “catching someone” doing something wrong, when in reality it is a way of “helping someone” do something right/safe.

Many times I have seen a checklist completed without actually “checking”. This has been called “pencil whipping”. So the question remains…Do checklists really work? The answer is… Checklists work but only if they are used properly.
