That it will have to face, one way or another

The rise of Biden to the White House has marked a pivotal change of direction in USA-EU relations. The new Administration has reconnected the partnership on both sides of the Atlantic and confirmed its commitment to strengthening its alliances, strained by the long and tumultuous Trump’s presidency.

But the unpredictability of the last four years has also turned to be a necessary wake-up call for Europe and its role as a player in the world. The shifting political and economic landscape in favor of more assertive protagonists and the disinterest of the USA in its old alliances have all revealed the weakness of the Old Continent and its bare vulnerability to the threats of more rapacious neighbors.

Many are the fronts where Europe needs to project its influence to secure stability on its borders: from the crisis in Crimea and Ukraine to the North Sea, the vulnerable Baltics, unstable North Africa, and the Sahel. In all these years the EU has shown all its limits and ineffectiveness to solve the pressing crisis that has exploded right outside the frontier.

The change of leadership and the rise of a strong far-right fringe could open to a new political instability within the EU and many foreign actors are watching closely to exploit any opportunity to enforce their dominance.
